In case you missed it: e.l.f. Cosmetics recently teamed up with “comedian” Matt Rife for a brand campaign and the internet promptly lit itself on fire. For the lucky who’ve never heard of Rife, he’s gained his fame off of viral crowd-work clips, originally building his career on a fanbase of women. But he made a sharp pivot in 2023 to jokes disparaging women’s bodies, domestic violence, and other easy targets (what we call “punching down” in comedy) to build dedicated “bros” fans.

e.l.f.’s core audience is overwhelmingly women, and the brand has positioned itself as inclusive and progressive, with numerous campaigns aimed at supporting rights and empowering women. 

Choosing to partner with Rife was a bizzar move, betraying their core audience for whatever marketing scheme they thought you were making.

Let's make sure they don't forget it.
